Drinking wine and don't know what to do with blending?

Blending should be a basic vocabulary that you will definitely hear when you come into contact with wine. "Is this a single variety or a multi-variety blend?" If you pay attention, this sentence should be familiar.

Blended wine is opposite to single wine. It can be said that the two are like ensemble and solo in the wine world. Grape varieties are musical instruments. Some instruments are only suitable for solo and some are suitable for ensemble. Each has its own merits. A classic blend is like listening to a powerful symphony, its balance and harmony are very moving. Want to become an experienced wine lover, but don't know how to make these blends?

1. What is blending and the role of blending

Blended wines generally refer to wines made from at least two grape varieties. Usually, one of the grape varieties will occupy more than 40-50% of the proportion, and the rest will be composed of two or more grape varieties.

Blending different grape varieties can increase complexity, add aroma, flavor, texture, and more. For example, if a winemaker finds that a grape variety is good in every way, but has a light aroma, he might add 5% of another more aromatic variety to add aroma to the wine. Through blending, winemakers can change the quality of a wine.

Both red and white wines can be blended, and red and white grape varieties can also be blended with each other, as long as it achieves the most suitable aroma and taste combination, such as Côte- Rôtie is a blend of red grape variety Syrah and white grape variety Viognier.

In addition, blending can occur not only between different grape varieties, but sometimes, between the same grape variety across regions; or, between grapes harvested at different stages of maturity; sometimes, blending can also occur between different buckets.

Also, blends can be made even if they are not of the same vintage, such as no-vintage champagne and port. This kind of blending method, we call it a no-year blend, it can balance the different flavor characteristics of each year, and it is easier to obtain a unified style. These blends will be marked NV or Non-vintage on the wine label, and no specific vintage information will appear on the wine label.
